TOPOGRAPHICAL SURVEY
What is a topographical survey?
A topographical survey is the precise mapping of a parcel of land that records the level and spatial position of both natural and constructed features. By using cartographic detail such as contour lines, spot levels, and feature symbols to show slopes, drains, vegetation, buildings, boundaries, and other site elements they can result in a either a 2D or 3D plan that can be used for further design. The Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) sets out various specifications and standards that are adopted by the industry with topographical surveys typically produced at a 1:200 scale (RICS Band F).
What are they used for?
Topographical surveys are essential to any construction, land development, engineering, or planning project. They help architects, engineers, and developers understand the land’s features before integrating new designs or assessing the suitability of a site. By interrogating the data presented on a plan, key physical constraints and opportunities can be identified at an early stage. This enables informed design decisions, a reduction in risk, and helps avoid delays or costly changes during construction.
What is the process of getting a topographical survey?
- Quoting: following your contact, we’ll begin a discussion with you to tailor the survey requirements to your site, including the exact area needed and any access requirements. Depending on the site and task at hand, we may need to arrange for a site visit, or we may be able to get enough information from what you supply and existing mapping and imagery. Don’t worry if you’re not fully sure at this stage, our experienced team can guide you through this stage having designed specifications for over 40 years,
- Site work: once we receive the go-ahead, we’ll schedule the site work to fit with your timings and availability. The exact nature of site work will vary, from an established reference network of control points that tie the survey either to British National Grid or your local site datum. Once set up, the data capture can begin, surveying features, boundaries, and levels using the chosen methodology most appropriate for the site and deliverables,
- Processing: when the site work is complete and we’re back in the office, we process the raw data to compute the final positions and get the calculations and reports checked via our in-house ISO 9001 accredited Quality Assurance procedures,
- Drafting deliverables: after the computations clear checking, the surveyor begins to digitally draw the survey, clearly indicating and labelling all the features surveyed to the industry-leading high cartographic standard that J C White Geomatics Ltd. is known for.
