Repeatable and Reliable Observations for Movement Detection

MONITORING SURVEY

Monitoring surveys involve the systematic, repeated measurement and recording of positions or levels of points to identify and movement, displacement, or deformation caused by natural or man-made factors. These services are often requested by structural engineers to support investigations, assess structural behaviour, or to meet an obligatory requirement such as party wall agreements.

By establishing baseline conditions and tracking change over time, monitoring provides reliable data that helps manage risk and ensure safety. Depending on the project’s needs, our surveyors can recommend the most appropriate monitoring approach, from simple manual observations to fully automated remote systems, ensuring the solution meets both the technical requirements, site conditions, scale, and budget.

We use it to detect settlement, heave, or deformation in a variety of structures such as buildings, bridges, tunnels, embankments, and retaining walls by observing known points along/around a structure in comparison to a fixed datum. By doing so on a regular basis, after a period of base observations, we can help inform residents, construction teams, and site managers of any movement before it causes costly and timely problems.

A total station adds a third dimension of movement monitoring, incorporating recording vertical and horizontal positions across a network of determined points at key areas on and around the area being monitored. These monitoring instruments are more capable than a regular total station and are highly precise with advanced optical measurement systems capable of automated observations with exceptional accuracy. When combined with prisms they allow for multiple points to be observed with high levels of redundant observations and confidence to deliver consistent millimetre-level results with reduced potential for human error. As an alternative, they can be used with retro-reflective targets for manual observations to deliver a more cost-effective and temporary solution, but with a reduction in efficiency and accuracy and more human influence.

We use total station monitoring to detect lateral movement, rotation, settlement, or deformation in structures such as buildings, retaining walls, bridges, tunnels, and excavation sites. By repeatedly observing fixed prisms or retro-reflective targets in relation to a stable control network, we can identify subtle changes in position that may indicate developing issues. Similarly to level monitoring, doing this at frequent intervals means we’re able to report on changes before disruptive issues arise.

Real-time structural and environmental data can be captured using intelligent wireless IoT technology within a wide range of sensors, including displacement, rotation, temperature, strain, vibration, distance, and third-party geotechnical instruments. These systems create robust medium and long range networks capable of transmitting data through crowded areas to a central portal, allowing the sensors to operate reliably even in challenging construction or infrastructure environments. Providing continuous, automated measurements leads to advanced detection of movement, stress, or changing conditions long before they become critical. With mirrored sensor nodes, flexible network methods, and a seamless integration into cloud-based dashboards, this option offers a comprehensive and low-maintenance solution.
