MEASURED BUILDING SURVEY
What is a measured building survey?
A measured building survey (MBS) is the precise recording of a structure’s internal and external dimensions, capturing the spatial arrangement and physical characteristics of architectural and structural elements. By using detailed measurement techniques to document walls, doors, windows, floor levels, ceiling heights, staircases, and service features, the survey produces accurate 2D drawings or 3D models that can be used for refurbishment, redevelopment, or facility management. The Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) provides specifications and standards that guide the industry, with measured building surveys typically being produced at 1:50 or 1:100 depending on the level of detail required.
At J C White Geomatics Ltd., our MBS plans are derived directly from precise survey data, ensuring that every dimension and feature is faithfully represented. By integrating a consistent level datum, clients can interrogate the drawings with confidence, whether working in CAD environments or referencing scaled PDF outputs. This level of accuracy make our plans an essential tool for architects, engineers, and planners seeking dependable information for refurbishment, extension, or conservation projects.
Floor Plans
J C White Geomatics Ltd. takes pride in the accuracy and reliability of our in‑house produced floor plan drawings, which have been trusted by councils, planners, and leading organisations for decades. Floor plans form a core component of our measured building survey services, and our extensive experience ensures that every drawing is prepared to the highest industry standards.
Our plans typically illustrate door openings, window positions, fixtures and fittings, and include both floor and ceiling levels as standard and overhead detail or levels at window heads and cills, can be readily provided should our clients require further specification.
Elevations
Elevations, whether internal or external, form an integral part of our measured building survey services. They are produced as accurate 2D orthographic projections of a building’s façade, providing clear and detailed representations of structural and architectural features. For a typical semi‑detached property, we would supply four elevations, each aligned to the geographic orientation of the principal façades.
Our elevation drawings typically include the building outline with roof detail, adjoining or neighbouring properties, door and window openings, as well as visible pipes, services, and cabling.
Sections
Section drawings provide an accurate representation of a structure or ground profile as if a thin slice had been taken through the building or terrain. The position of each section is clearly indicated on the measured floor plans by a section line, ensuring clarity and consistency across all outputs. For buildings and structures, sections offer valuable insight into construction methods and the relationships between components such as staircases, walls, floor thicknesses, and window or door openings.
J C White Geomatics Ltd. also produces a wide range of section drawings, from topographic cross‑sections, such as profiles through rivers or landforms, to detailed architectural sections that may incorporate elevational detail for greater context in complex buildings.
Roof Plans
Roof plans provide a clear and comprehensive view of the roof structure from above, enabling accurate interpretation of its form and detailing. These drawings capture the geometry of ridges, hips, valleys, and eaves, as well as the placement of features such as chimneys, skylights, vents, and drainage outlets. For more complex buildings, roof plans can also illustrate slopes, fall directions, and construction joints to support design, maintenance, and compliance requirements.
Street Scene Elevations
Street scene elevations provide a continuous orthographic projection of building façades along a defined stretch of road, offering a clear representation of how individual properties relate to one another within their wider urban or suburban context. These drawings are particularly valuable for planning applications, design proposals, and conservation work, as they illustrate the scale, rhythm, and architectural character of the streetscape.
Typical detail shown on street scene elevations includes the outlines of buildings and roof profiles, door and window openings, boundary treatments, and visible services or street furniture. Where relevant, adjoining properties are included to ensure the drawing reflects the complete context of the site.
What is the process of getting a measured building survey?
- Quoting: following your contact, we’ll begin a discussion with you to tailor the survey requirements to your building, including the exact areas to be measured (such as floor plans, elevations, or sections) and any access requirements. Depending on the complexity of the property, we may need to arrange for a site visit to assess scope, or we may be able to work from the information you supply. Don’t worry if you’re not fully sure at this stage, our experienced team can guide you through the options, having designed specifications for measured building surveys for over 40 years,
- Site work: once we receive the go-ahead, we’ll schedule the site work to fit with your timings and availability. The exact nature of site work will vary, but it will be based on establishing accurate control points within and around the building to ensure consistency across all measurements. Once set up, the data capture can begin, recording structural details, internal layouts, and architectural features using the most appropriate surveying methodology for the building and the required deliverables,
- Processing: when the site work is complete and we’re back in the office, we process the raw survey data to compute precise dimensions and positions. All calculations and outputs are checked via our in-house ISO 9001 accredited Quality Assurance procedures to ensure accuracy and reliability,
- Drafting deliverables: after the computations clear checking, the surveyor begins to digitally draw the measured building survey. This includes producing clear, detailed plans, elevations, and sections, with all features accurately indicated and labelled to the industry-leading cartographic standard that J C White Geomatics Ltd. is known for.

Case Study: The Old Bailey, London

At the heart of London’s justice system, the Old Bailey stands as an iconic neo‑Baroque landmark. When accurate elevation drawings were needed to support Cathedral Works Organisation with a detailed stone cleaning programme, J C White Geomatics Ltd. delivered a laser scanning survey of the building’s facades and courtyards. Working at night to minimise disruption and using advanced techniques to capture every detail, the team produced precise digital records that set new standards for heritage documentation.
